After trying to deciper the manual that accompanied the 40D, this book is a breath of fresh air. Very readable and easy to understand. Lots of great stuff. Wish I would have bought this the day I bought the camera rather than 1.5 years later.
For more advanced photographers, I would suggest Charlotte Lowrie's Canon EOS 40D Digital Field Guide. So, I didn't feel like I learned much new information from Busch's book.
The book is very clear and well-illustrated. It tells you exactly what buttons to press to do X, Y, Z.
This is a good book if you've never used Canon EOS digital cameras, or if you're new to digital SLR photography. I didn't read this book until I'd be using my Canon 40D for a while and had already learned a fair amount about photography from other sources.
Busch tries to be neutral and doesn't tell you to do this or that (like Scott Kelby). He makes suggestions: you can try this or this, but he doesn't push anything.
The button pressing I never found difficult, as the Canon interface is well-designed and intuitive. Lowrie voices her opinions more and explains fewer basic concepts, jumping right away into intermediate/advanced topics.
That did not happen. I had high hopes for this book based on reviews. At first I thought ok any minute now he will tell me what ALL the dials do-instead the writer dives into many many technical aspects losing me completely within a few chapters. The book is well written from a technical aspect but gets over the semi-literate average persons head very quickly. I have a Canon 40D and hoped to cover all the basics and learn how to finesse this camera. I purchased the Dvd set Canon 40D Made Easy-it was exactly what I needed. Good luck.
I have tried several guides for the EOS 40D and have been extremely disappointed with all of them except for this one by David Busch. Enough said.
Very informative, well written. Outstanding photos of menus. A great way to learn how to use the 40D as well a learn photography.
