This book became my learning bible. Unlike the manufacturers book this one made sense and I did not have to jump from section to section. Lots of large color photos. An old guy like me needs pictures.
This was my first Digital SLR camera so most of the controls were new to me. I found this book to be more instructional than the owners manual. If you need a reference to take you through the full spectrum of this cameras capabilities then I recommend this book to you.
This is a really good manual and not just a book with pictures. Although it does get into the usual photography techniques, its detailed information on the camera itself is more thorough than others I've read for other cameras. 5 stars for the content, presentation, and the fair price.
In addition, a good part of it is devoted to basic photography, not the 40D itself. I upgraded to the 40D from the 30D, and decided to get this book hoping to add to what I had learned from reading the Canon manual. While this book is well laid out and well written, it does not contain any new knowledge. If you are new to the XXD series cameras, you can add a star to my review and I would recommend this book. But coming from the 30D, I should have saved my money and put it towards my next lens.
I purchased this book some time ago, and it did not have the error he mentions. With any new camera, it becomes difficult to try and understand all of the features and functions. Canon EOS 40D Guide to Digital Photography is a great companion to the owners' manual as it provides details and real world examples of how features should be set or at a minimum what they do.After a few frustrating picture taking experiences, I decided to purchase this book. Ultimately it will increase your confidence in using the camera which should result in better pictures.I have to disagree with the reviewer who lost some pictures because of an error he found, although I sympathize with him. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone. Since reading it, I feel my understanding of how the camera should be set has been dramatically enhanced as has my confidence.
As I understand it, the error was fixed shortly after the book came out, and all copies since then do not have it. The manual that comes with this Canon camera just does not seem sufficient to give all of the details. I have found it to be very accurate and the most authoritative book available for the Canon 40D. If you are new to the Canon 40D or if you are just not sure what all the capabilities are for this camera I would suggest picking up a copy of this book. I think you will appreciate the ease of reading and the depth of content it provides. I realize that old copies can remain on the shelves and be sold even after newer printings become available, which is why book stores accept returns for exchange.
I also take issue with the same reviewer's assertion that the high ratings given this book are from "beginners" who "simply didn't understand what they were reading." I suspect that the high ratings actually came from people who valued the information they got from this book, and that more than a few of them might have as much, or more experience in photography.
